journal article soon to be published....

Post a new topicby dlp on Thu Nov 22, 2007 12:00 am

I am an RN and have had RSD for 9 years. I was at my pain management doctor today and was quite alarmed when he told me he had just come from a seminar where he heard an article is soon to be published by ortho. (I am sorry I do not have any other information at this time.. by whom or by what study group).... The gist of the article is this... they are encouraging doctors not to use the diagnosis of RSD/CRPS, saying it does not exist...if there is an underlying cause one should have that diagnosis, i.e....pain after fracture...failed back surgery.. etc...My doctor pretty much said they want to throw away the diagnosis of RSD/CRPS completely. He also said it was again mentioned that RSD/CRPS is more mental than physical, that these patients may have psychosomatic complaints and/or are malingering. Now my doc is excellent and we have had a great relationship for many years, but he even said to me today that he felt he had never seen me as good as I was a time 4 years back when I was trying to give my daughter a kidney, implying that maybe there was something to this. Well we have been down this RSD road together for a long time, and he knows I have had a complete mental health evaluation and found to be totally "normal" with just a slight bit of depression As we discussed the upcoming article and his comment, I think he realized it was a bit unfair implying as he did that the mental component may be more important, a priority instead of a second thought. (He is a good doctor, and was the first to diagnosis me, we have worked very hard at trying to revere my RSD) My major concern now is for those who don't have a doc they trust and have a good close trusting relationship with, those that may be involved in legal battles with RSD/CRPS as a diagnosis, or those just newly in pain searching for a proper diagnosis. I worry that RSD/CRPS will take a heavy hit backwards if this article is published.
My doctor has told me that those responsible for this article have been asked not to publish "just yet"....(asked by who, I don't know this either)...but apparently there are others in the medical community trying to suppress this article for a bit. The publishing group has agreed to wait, but for how long is not known.
So, does anyone know anything more about this article? The specifics of who, what, where, and when? Anyone else out there as worried about this? Somehow I think something needs to be done...
