What does OCD mean?I know what it stands for and i have read the articles on it, but it seems like everyone would have some sort of OCD from my point of view. Everyone has something that has to be a certian way. I, for one, have to clean my nails; constantly. When i'm bored or nervous it gets worse. I can't chew on the same side and must alternate. Does this mean i have OCD? And is it nessecarily a bad thing? ((excuse my spelling, please; i'm 13)) Many people have 'habits' that they do. Does this mean they have OCD also? This condition confuses me a bit and any answers would be appreciated. :)

What distinguishes genuine OCD from mere bad habits, like nail biting or knuckle cracking, is that the thoughts (obsessions) and acts (compulsions) are both intrusive and unwanted. In other words, they interfere with our ability to function, sometimes on the most rudimentary level. A bad habit isn't going to ruin your day--the nail biter is usually oblivious to the effect of his habit on others as well as himself. It's not likely to make him late for work (like the obsessive-compulsive's need to return repeatedly to the bathroom to wash his hands before being able to leave the house in the morning will), or cause him to repeatedly reschedule a business meeting, both to his financial detriment. The symptoms of OCD are relentless and debilitating. Believe me--if you've got it, you know it. There isn't much room for debate on the matter.
Re: What does OCD mean?Thank you :)
that helped me alot and now understand the difference. You HAVE to do it and it interupts your daily life. Before i just thought it was an extreme habit.
